Guru Purnima 2022

This Full Moon, July 13th, is one of the most auspicious Full Moons of the year, celebrated as the holiday of 'Guru Purnima.' Guru is teacher and Purnima is Full Moon. This is the time of year where both academic and spiritual teachers get honored with due thanks and displays of gratitude.

The Guru - Disciple relationship or 'Guru-shishya' relationship is seen as the most coveted of relationships and seen as the only 'true' relationship. 'True relationship' you may ask? Because all other relationships are based on conditions, are usually of self-centered types, and thus create bondage that lock us into another incarnation. It is this relationship of Guru- Disciple that is beyond the worldly relationships of conditional love. It is the bond between the teacher and student that frees the student from bondage. The 'Guru' is the door way leading us to ultimate freedom.

The word 'Guru' isn't just translated as the dispeller of the darkness of ignorance, but dispels the darkness that is the result of body identification.

The reality that we are not this body, not this mind, not our emotions, is lived and realized in the Guru.

They reflect to us our true nature, our highest sense.

In an academic sense, teachers are also honored during this day, as they aid us in our path of knowledge- teaching us trades, disciplines and equipping us with knowledge of how to make a living. Yet a true spiritual master, or Guru, is one who shows us how to live and not merely how to make a living.

This relationship of Guru- Disciple has been occurring since time immemorial.

A simple whisper from the original Yogi, Shiva, arrived to aid all humanity to beckon them home, to live awakened to their celestial heights. From one ear to the next, to this moment now. How many Guru Purnimas have been celebrated do you think?

The origin of this festival starts with Shiva, when Shiva became the first Guru. It is said that a yogi of phenomenal abilities came to the Himalayas 15,000 years ago and it was there that seven men came to visit him, waiting for him to open his eyes. These men became those that are eternally known as the ‘Sapta Rishis’ or the seven seers. It was this Full Moon day, 15,000 years ago that the first teaching was given by Shiva to the Sapta Rishi’s.

If the day couldn’t be any more significant as the origin of Yoga, two other great souls have been linked to this holiday; Veda Vyasa and Buddha.

It was said that Veda Vyasa, the compiler of the sacred texts of India ‘The Vedas,’ was born on this day, and Buddha was known to have given his first sermon on this day.

So, it is a powerhouse of a Full Moon to say the least.

Access these most ancient and auspicious Full Moon vibrations by meditating, fasting, praying, and giving physical or spoken displays of gratitude to all those in your life who are your ‘teachers.’
Jai Guru Dev, may this Guru Purnima assist us all in moving from darkness to light.
